Cancer care starts with prevention

Our comprehensive approach to cancer begins long before diagnosis. Living healthy and learning early are the best defenses. So we provide members with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to help keep cancer from developing. And we use a rigorous screening system to detect any problems as early as possible.

Lowering risk with healthier habits

Cancer has numerous causes, many of them still unknown. But we do know that lifestyle plays a major role in its development. One study found that lifestyle factors account for up to 75% of cancer deaths.1 So we work with our members to help them make positive changes through diet, exercise, weight management, or stopping unhealthy habits.

#1 in screenings

We've made it our mission to have every member screened on time, every time. So we've implemented comprehensive, convenient, and effective programs to screen our members for breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer. And the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) reports that programwide we rate in the top 5% of the nation in breast cancer screening rates for women, as well as cervical and colorectal cancer screenings.2,3 By following the established protocols and advocating regular screenings, we’re better able to prevent or detect and treat cancers early and save lives.

A personal screening schedule

Regular screenings can detect cancer early, leading to better outcomes. So we make it easy for members to make them part of their care routine. Your Kaiser Permanente electronic health record and preventive screening protocols will be aligned to create your personal screening schedule. This schedule is available to you online, so it's easy to check when you had your last screening, and when the next is due.4

Convenient screening is effective screening

When a screening date approaches, we’ll reach out to you to schedule your screening. If you make an appointment for any other reason, your electronic health record will notify our staff, doctors, and nurses that a screening is due, and they’ll work with you to schedule an appointment.
